Update Posted

Posted a newer version of this track. It sounds very similar to the first track but I added another instrument track of Mellotron Flutes mixed quietly to fill in some space. Also the performance has been tightened up. The bass and guitar parts were too loose for my liking and I re-eq'ed the Bass parts to provide more low end.

Believe it or not, I actually reperformed all of the keyboard parts and this performance is a bit different than the first version. The biggest difference is in the RMI piano parts.

I have come up with a plan to provide the MIDI tracks and their corresponding audio track by instrument but I need to determine a method that will allow one to download the files rather than have them play back. I am sure there is a way to do this inside of the blogger environment and I will keep you posted.

So, enjoy the track and let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Jim

UH OH

You know, I was listening to this track and something was missing. I thought it was the voicing of the chords of the RMI but it wasn't that. I thought it was the voicing of the MELLOTRON strings and it wasn't that.

Then it hit me, I was hearing another instrument EQ'ed with alot of mids. So, I played around with some of Tony's other sounds (I knew it was the PRO SOLOIST) so, that led me to another MELLOTRON instrument. And I am not sure that I have the right TONY patch for his FLUTES but that is what I thought it was.

Well, this instrument filled the mix in and made the whole track sound fuller and I did notice that the MELLOTRON strings were primarily mixed in the center with alot of reverb (except at the end). This just led me to start playing with the whole mix and yes, the FLUTES shed a whole new light on my approach to mixing the song.

To cut a long story short, I will be putting up a newer version of Broadway Melody very shortly and there isn't alot of performance differences (well, yes, if you consider I replayed all of the keyboard parts) but I think this new mix is much better than the first version I posted.

You know, none of these tracks are really ever done but I hope that each change brings the project closer to its objective which is to recreate The Lamb in MIDI as closely as possible to GENESIS' original tracks using only MIDI and virtual instruments.

Check back in a few days for the new and improved version.

Thanks,
Jim

Feedback

Well, already got some feedback about the TRONS sounding good but being too loud in the mix. So, for your listening enjoyment, I tweaked the mix a bit and the new version is already LINKED up (of course the TRONS are softer). The Rick 12 string distorted guitar part then became overbearingly loud, so I tweaked the level of this instrument in the mix as well.

I only changed the TRONS on the Karoake version but the vocal version has all tweaks of the mix included.

Thanks for the high ratings so far, very encouraging. I might even try to take on even a more difficult track next.

Finally Done

Just like we all know. Nothing is as hard as first appears but also nothing is as easy as first appears. The structure of this song came together in a couple of hours. But in true GENESIS form, there are details in this tune that didn't reveal themselves until close listening scrutiny. It did take a week and not a couple of days but Broadway Melody is posted below for your enjoyment.

Your feedback is invaluable to me so please take a few seconds to rate the song using the poll on the top right side of this page.

Thanks,
Jim

Broadway Melody of 1974

What a great tune and the easiest to recreate in MIDI. I jumped over to this song because I just got the new box set and the surround sound mix made it real easy to sample Peter's vocal lines without bleed through. Also, I can more clearly hear the parts and thus recreate them with more accuracy both in performance and production (mixing, effects, etc).

I put this entire song together in a couple of days since it is a relatively easy tune to play. I also took the time to try and use a different drum kit from Ocean Way Drums that has more of the open ended TOM sound and a simpler snare drum.

Let me know what you think of this track by rating the sound using the gadget in the upper right section of this page.

Thanks and enjoy,
Jim
